New Under 5s Clinic at Kachere

A new Under 5 Clinic has been built and funded by Karen, a volunteer with RIPPLE Africa between May and December 2004. Karen wanted to make a difference and when she saw that the Under 5 Clinic and the normal patients had to vie for space at the Kachere Health Centre, she decided to invest her time and money in this new building, which should be completed and functioning in January 2005. She has also set up a vegetable garden at Kachere. Well done, Karen!

Mary (Frank’s wife) will be teaching orphans in the new Under 5 Clinic building several days a week.

Sadly, Ernest Kamanga, the Senior Health Surveillance Assistant at Kachere, lost his fight against AIDS and died in August 2004. His post has been taken by Dyson. Ernest is pictured here with Sarah.

Some Facts and Figures

We had a visit from Dr Charles Munthali, the District Health Officer, and his team from Nkhata Bay to thank RIPPLE Africa for their help at Kachere Health Centre. It was a very enlightening meeting, and we discussed some of the statistics that the area has to work with. You may find these interesting!!

Medical Information Pack

Our thanks to Sarah and Suresh, two American doctors who volunteered at Mwaya and Mzuzu, for writing a Medical Information Pack which future medical volunteers will find very useful. It gives a summary of what to expect at Kachere in terms of illnesses, medicines available, and what to bring.

RIPPLE Renovates Nurse's House

In April 2004, Juliet Ngwira left Kachere Health Centre to work at Tukombo Girls School and, although we now have Mathias (a Medical Assistant), Kachere has not had a permanent nurse for the remainder of 2004. On our recent visit, we were told that one of the main reasons that nurses do not stay was the poor standard of the nurse’s accommodation. RIPPLE Africa has financed and organised the refurbishment of this building in the hope that a permanent nurse can be recruited and retained.

Kachere AIDS Testing and Counselling Centre

AIDS is a huge problem in Malawi, but now Kachere has its own AIDS testing and counselling centre funded by CPAR (Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief). There are three Malawian staff (one paid and two volunteers) who can test and provide immediate results and then give much needed advice for those that test positive or who require information.
