MWAYA BEACH

New Chalets for Volunteers

The five new chalets for the volunteers at Mwaya Beach have been completed. These new buildings have proved to be a great success. They are roomy (5 metres x 7 metres), they all have views of the lake, they are light and all have good ventilation. The roof tiles, which are unusual for lakeshore properties, look great and should give many years of service. It is quite cosy in the buildings when it’s raining.

Real Showers At Last!

Although some of the volunteers grew to love the old toilet and shower arrangements, the new shower and toilet block is a great improvement. There are three flush toilets, three basins, and two showers with hot running water.

A borehole has been drilled and shortly a solar pump will pump the water into the 5,000 litre tank, producing high pressure showers.

New Kitchen and Store

The old kitchen has been demolished and the new kitchen and store is near completion. It will provide lots of useful space with open sides and wonderful views.

New Manager at Mwaya Beach

Maxwell has been promoted to the position of Manager at Mwaya Beach. He has now finished school and, for the last year, has been working at the Lodge during the weekends and holidays. In his time at Mwaya he has rightly earned the respect of all of the staff and builders, and his appointment has proved to be a very popular one. The initial signs are that he is taking his role very seriously, and we wish him every success.

Mazembe Women's Group

The Mazembe Women’s Group have been busy making bags and hair bands, etc., and they are now venturing into making clothes. RIPPLE Africa will be funding a new sewing machine for the group to use, and the money made from selling dresses similar to the ones shown will be invested in additional sewing machines.

Thank You!

Mwaya has again cast its magical spell over the volunteers who have stayed at Mwaya Beach during 2004. We have thoroughly enjoyed meeting everyone on our two visits and have been very impressed with the commitment and enthusiasm that everyone has brought to Mwaya. Thank you all for your contributions and fundraising.

Best wishes
