New Managers at Mwaya Beach

Joey Victoria
Following Maxwell’s rather unexpected departure to South Africa in July 2006, Force valiantly stepped in to manage Mwaya Beach as well as the environmental project until we returned to Malawi in December. In January 2007, we appointed Joey and Victoria as our Managers Responsible for Volunteers, Mwaya Beach and Community Liaison, and they have been doing a great job.

News of Past Volunteers

Returning Volunteers: Ben, Judith and Diana

Ben, who volunteered as a healthcare assistant with RIPPLE Africa for six months from the beginning of October 2005 until the end of April 2006, came back to Mwaya Beach with his dad, Dan. They arrived at the beginning of June, and Ben received a rapturous welcome from all his friends both locally and further afield. Their trip was the first one Dan had made outside of America, and it was very obvious how proud he was of Ben’s achievements during his placement. They stayed at Mwaya Beach for two weeks and then went travelling for just over a week before returning for a few days before departing for Lilongwe and their plane home. Ben is just about to start his second year as a medical student at Madison, and he’s very keen to return to Mwaya when funds allow!

Judith, who stayed at Mwaya for four months at the beginning of 2006, has returned to try and help the women’s group in North Mazembe to set up and run a sustainable business. All being well, she intends to stay for three or four months. She is currently staying with Peter and Selina at their house in North Mazembe but is looking for a house to rent for the remainder of her visit.

Diana, who came to Mwaya at the beginning of 2005, made a short visit to see her friends at Mwaya whilst staying at Kande Beach for a short holiday. Unfortunately, Diana had had to cut her placement short through illness, and everyone was delighted to see her again.

Wedding Bells: Alie, and Anneke
Alie and John

Alie, one of the first volunteers at Mwaya, was married to John on 30 June 2007 (see the picture on the left).

Anneke, a Dutch nurse who was a healthcare assistant for nearly four months at the end of 2004 and beginning of 2005 with her friend, Elly, wrote to us recently to say that she is getting married in August 2007.

We wish them all much happiness in the future.

Developments at Mwaya Beach
Building work has almost finished at Mwaya Beach, and only one of the original buildings remains — the stone chalet on the beach. All the other buildings have been demolished and replaced, and new buildings have been added (for example, the volunteers' chalets, the volunteers' and staff washrooms, and the office). The last two buildings to be constructed are a guest chalet and Geoff and Liz's house, and these are now nearing completion. Also, a secure storeroom has been added to the end of the staff washroom.
