Celia's Story (July 2003)

"After seven months living at Mwaya it broke my heart to leave, and I still think of the friends I made there everyday. I learned so much about another culture and myself, and hopefully I gave something to the people out there too."

To go or not to go, that was the question. Sitting in my comfortable office in London, Malawi seemed far away and very daunting, but the decision to go out there as a volunteer is one I will never regret. The project in Malawi appealed to me as it seemed like a genuine small-scale initiative, aimed at independent volunteers.

When I arrived, everyone in the village was so friendly and welcoming. The children in the school were so lovable, not to mention the beautiful surroundings and sunshine!

After seven months living at Mwaya it broke my heart to leave, and I still think of the friends I made there everyday. I learned so much about another culture and myself, and hopefully I gave something to the people out there too. I’m sure I will be back one day.
